China hosted a summit with the leaders of Central Asian nations in Xi'an. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, President Sadyr Zhaparov of Kyrgyzstan, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan attended the summit as well.

UN Assessment of Human Rights in Xinjiang, August 31, 2022

The United Nations Human Rights Office issued its report on human rights conditions in Xinjiang. The UN's High Commissioner for Human Rights visited China in May 2022. The UN concluded that China's detention system of Uyghurs and others was fundamentally unjust and that allegations of abuses against detainees were credible. China issued a lengthy response to the report, arguing that the government's actions protected social stability and that human rights for all in Xinjiang had improved. U.S. President Joseph Biden called for "a summit on democracy." 110 governments were invited to participate, but China and Russia were among those not included. The Chinese and Russian ambassadors published a joint op-ed in response. A few days later, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs published this report.
