Xi Jinping addressed the Indonesian parliament in Jakarta and laid out his wish that China and Indonesia work together in building a Maritime Silk Road. The initiative wasn't formally named at the time, but would become 一带一路, the Belt and Road Initiative.

At this speech in the capital of Kazakhstan, Xi highlights the historical links between China and Central Asia. The next year he spoke in Indonesia of the maritime silk road portion of what will be known as the Belt and Road Initiative.
