Teng Jimeng 滕继萌 teaches American studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University. He specializes in pop culture and society and has written extensively on American music and social change. Here he discusses his 2016 translation of the best known biography of Bob Dylan, Robert Shelton’s No Direction Home: The Life and Music of Bob Dylan 《迷途家园：鲍勃 迪伦的音乐与生活》and the place of Dylan and American popular music in China.
Dylan has been well-known in China for a long time. Lyrics from five decades of his music have been collected and translated. He performed in China in 2011. Receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2016 only enhanced his standing there. Teng has long been a Dylan authority and is a frequent commentator for both the Chinese and foreign press on cultural issues and U.S.-China relations. Teng has twice been a Fulbright Scholar and twice won excellence in teaching awards at BFSU.
