China and Pakistan Exchange the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, January 4, 2006

The ceremony of exchanging the ratification instruments of the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between the People's Republic of China and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan was held today in Beijing. Wu Dawei, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister and Salman Bashir, Pakistan's ambassador to China, signed the letter of exchanging the ratification instruments of the treaty on behalf their governments.

The Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between China and Pakistan was signed by Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao with Pakistani Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz On April 5, 2005, in Istanbul. The National People's Congress (NPC) of China and the Pakistani Cabinet completed the review and ratified the treaty. The exchange of ratification instruments indicates that the two countries have completed all legal procedures. The treaty entered into force on January 4, 2006.

Wu said, "the Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation between China and Pakistan consolidates the aspirations of the two peoples for lasting friendship for generations to come in the form of law and indicates that the all-weather friendship between China and Pakistan enters a new stage of development. This year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between China and Pakistan. I believe that with the concerted efforts of both sides, the bilateral strategic cooperative relationship will move further ahead."
