This series of lessons will be a part of my second unit of study and will cover four hours of instruction. During this unit, we will look at analyzing visual rhetoric, which is an important component of the AP English Language curriculum. Prior to this unit, students will have experience with analyzing written forms of rhetoric, including various forms of figurative language and forms of repetition, including parallel structure. This series of lessons will extend that form of thinking by offering students the opportunity to apply these analysis skills to images by using OPTIC--an English strategy for analyzing visual rhetoric. We will be using one of the readings from the course, Ebrey's chapter "Red Guards" from Reading #5, and various Maoist propaganda posters I found online. (The selection was inspired by the various posters Clay showed us in class.)
I used common core standards as the basis for these lessons.
