Lesson plan for Grade 2:

 

1.         A rationale for the proposed unit

 

This lesson plan is suitable for language learning class, or some East Asian Culture classes. Students should have basic ideas about where those East Asia countries are, and they should also have some second language learning experience. They will learn East Asian cultures through plenty of activities through this whole week learning.

Content objectives: East Asian Culture Journey

 

 

Maryland Standard 5.0 History :Students shall inquire about significant events, ideas, beliefs, and themes to identify patterns and trends and to analyze how individuals and societies have changed over time to make connections to the present in their communities, Maryland, the United States, and the world.

 

Maryland Standard 6.0 Skills and Processes:Students shall inquire about civics, geography, economics, history, and people and nations of the world using disciplinary literacy skills and processes to critically evaluate content through a variety of source materials across disciplines and use reading, writing, and other forms of communication to develop, defend, and critique arguments in order to take informed action.

First lesson

 

lesson objectives:China (1.5 hour)

 

materials to be used:books, videos, color pens, print paper with animals

 

Detailed lesson plan

 

a.    Introduction

 

Dynasties in China and typical traditional cloth styles   (20 minutes)

 

b.    Introduce twelve animals:  Zodiac signs (15 minutes)

 

 

c.     class and individual activities:

Introduce Dragon and Panda, color those two animals  (15 minutes)

 

d.  Reading: Read some folk stories (20minutes)

 

Nuwa mending the sky

Cowherd and Weaver Girl

Mulan joins the army   

e.    Questions to have discussion: (15minutes)

Which story do you like best? Why?

Why Mulan needed to join the army?

Why Cowherd and Weaver Girl only meet once a year?

Teach students pronunciation of some Japanese Hiragana, Katakana (20 minutes)

 

Teach students pronunciation of Korean pronunciation and writing system (20minutes)

 

b.    class and individual activities:

Play a video about the original of those three countries’ writing systems (15 minutes)

 

c.     Discussion-launching questions  (15minutes)

Compare different writing systems of three different countries

Which writing system is the most difficult one? Why?

Which writing system is the easiest one? Why?

What are differences between English writing system and those three countires?

 

d.    Try to use calligraphy to write them down. (30minutes)
