Chinese poems

Learning Objectives:
Students will understand that Chinese poems are implicit.
(Elementary level Mandarin immersion curriculum. No CA standards)

Materials:
相思 One-Hearted
王维 Wang Wei

红豆生南国, When those red berries come in springtime,
春来发几枝, Flushing on your southland branches,
愿君多采撷, Take home an armful, for my sake,
此物最相思。 As a symbol of our love.

静夜思 Thinking on a Quiet Night
李白 Li Bai

床前明月光, The moon is shining bright in front of my bed,
疑是地上霜, I think that it is frost upon the ground.
举头望明月, I raised my head and look at the bright moon,
低头思故乡。 I lower my head and think of my home.

Steps:
Teacher will read One-Hearted to the class. With the whole class, teacher will develop four levels of questions with students, and answer afterwards. In this process, teacher can use Think-Pair-Share to promote thinking.

One-Hearted
Thinking on a Quiet Night
Right there!
When was this poem written?

Think and Search
Who was this poem written for?
Where did this person get the red berries and take home?

You and the Author
Why use red berries? Can other things work?

On Your Own
Since it is a poem about love, why they don’t send each other flowers?
What if the person didn’t take red berries home, would his/her lover be mad?

After answer the questions through discussions, teacher will give students the second poem “Thinking on a Quiet Night”. Students will work independently on the questions, and then get in groups to share their questions with others, and answer questions together. During the group work, teacher will walk around the class and help the groups with ELLs. After that, teacher can hold a big group discussion about the poem, and check students’ understanding.

Assessments:
Students write about the main ideas about the two poems, and explain why they believe so.
