Chinese Culture and Student Identity

I have used Sandra Cisneros' vignette "My Name" as a way for students to explore their identities. This lesson extends the reading of the vignette and the writing of their own vignettes to include an exploration of identity as it relates to various aspects of culture. The lesson is meant to be used as an introduction for a new class and would be followed by selected short stories and poems such as "Fish Cheeks" by Amy Tan, which further address issues related to identity particularly in adolescents.
