White Vengeance

White Vengeance is a 2011 film written and directed by Daniel Lee. It stars Leon Lai, Feng Shaofeng, Liu Yifei, Zahang Hanyu and many others. It has English subtitles which are okay with the exception of a few lines where there isn't enough time to read half of the what is written. This does not impede the ability to follow the plot, but for many students they wouldn't be able to keep up with the subtitles.

The story takes place at the fall of the Qin dynasty and the founding of the Han Dynasty. The story is about the rivalry between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu and their battle to become the new emperor. Much of the plot revolves around the Hongmen Banquet and the events leading up to it. The story line jumps around in time, so it can be somewhat difficult to follow. The battle scenes are interesting and well done without being too graphic. The scenery and costumes are beautiful, but the acting could be better. Overall it was a pretty good film.

There are a few scenes that might be useful in the class when teaching about the fight for power and the rise of the new emperor. I probably would not show more than a few minutes because many students would have a difficult time reading the subtitles. This would cause them to not really follow what is happening, become bored, and not pay attention which makes the activity useless. Students would also have to be taught the history of the Hongmen Banquet before watching the film.
