I often ask myself that question when it comes to life and destiny. In the movie Ocean Heaven, portraying Jet Li as an autistic young man Dafu, a message of hope is the central idea. A father is diagnosed with terminal cancer and is given only a few months to live. He is afraid of passing away and leaving his autistic son behind because he believes Dafu won’t be able to take care of himself. So at the opening of the movie, he tries to drown both of them. However, Dafu is able to rescue both. Then the father understands that he has to prepare his son Dafu to become independent and in this journey both of them discover a great deal about what is really important about “a normal way of living”. There are many emotionally charged scenes where it is almost impossible not to cry. It also shows a different perspective on the challenges an autistic person has to deal with and how society is not well prepared to deal with this issue. In addition, we also observe that there is still hope to society because Dafu is surrounded by a great number of nice people who is willing to help him and his father. This movie also gives the audience a good perspective of the Chinese modern society and how they view people with disabilities. Great movie!
