Growing up, I’ve been a fan of historical based Chinese films. Below, I highlight two films that can be used in the classroom.
Hero (2002)Summary for Classroom Use: Directed by Zhang Yimou, Hero is a visually captivating film set in ancient China during the Warring States period. It explores deep themes such as unity, sacrifice, and the moral complexities of leadership through the story of a nameless hero who seeks to assassinate the King of Qin. In the classroom, Hero serves as an excellent tool for discussing the historical context of the Warring States period, examining the philosophical concepts of Confucianism and Legalism, and exploring the tension between individual desires and state responsibilities. The film’s rich cinematography and thoughtful narrative offer a multi-faceted approach to understanding this tumultuous era in Chinese history.
