The movie that I chose to watch was The Admiral: Roaring Currents (via Netflix). This movie was a great action film, and had awesome acting with the classic, dramatic hooks and music. It is subtitled, therefore it requires close attention to understand the story line. At first, I wasn’t really sure who was who, therefore I had to look up the description again just to verify my understanding of the film- it would help to have more periodization information on warrior outfits. But once I got the characters straight, it was easy to follow.
Although I would not show the entire film, because my students would really struggle to follow the subtitles, the fighting scenes were great! It almost felt like I was watching Pirates of the Caribbean. Students would be really engaged in the action, and it would be fun to look at the communication strategies and tactics of war during this time period. I also think that in general, students would be interested in the story line and history of the underdog. One thing that I am wondering is how accurate the representation of the period is in this movie, in particular the clothing, weaponry, and ships?
Lastly, I appreciated the movie’s focus on the emotion of fear, and turning fear into courage. This could be a great discussion point in general for students and allowing them to discuss how or when they have turned fear into courage.
