introduction to EAA

The magazine Education About Asia is one of best resources for teachers anywhere. I've been a fan of it since its inception fifteen years ago. The magazine is published by the Association for Asian Studies, the leading professional association in this field and is edited by Lucien Ellington, a Japan specialist and a professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Every issue features articles providing educators with essential background about an important topic. It also features teaching tips, lists of resources, film and book reviews and interesting interviews. Some issues focus on a particular theme (e.g., Islam in Asia, using film to teach about Asia, Asia in world history, and so on). Most of our seminar participants have become fans of the publication as well. You can see references to specific articles or methods introduced in EAA scattered about the various forums.

I've attached the table of comments for the winter 2010 issue. The publication comes out three times a year. You can get additional information at: http://www.asian-studies.org/EAA/index.htm. Some past articles are available online and you can learn how to subscribe or order back issues.

Please feel free to chime in this thread if you've read EAA and utilized any of the ideas available there.

[full disclosure: I'm a member of the editorial board - but I was a fan and dedicated user of the publication for years before joining the board]

Because the Association for Asian Studies is moving its offices, it is making an unprecedented offer to new or renewing subscribers of Education about Asia. For the cost of postage and handling, you can receive a nearly complete set of 15 years of back issues! Take advantage of this -- put these on your department resource shelf.

If you don't want to subscribe (but why not?), you can also order any particular back issue still in stock for just $2.

Seize the day! Get your order in:

You can search back issues of Education about Asia at the EAA website. You can input key words and locate articles. Most articles are not available online (with luck that will change before too long), but you'll be able to quickly locate resources you may find helpful. If you take advantage of the wonderful offer mentioned above (see special opportunity), you can pick up a nearly complete hard copy set of the magazine. I have such a set and use the online database to speed locating articles.

Give it a try:
