east asian television -- in america

In several large TV markets, there are one or more stations that broadcast in Chinese or broadcast about China and Chinese topics in English. In Los Angeles, Beauty Media has two broadcast stations:
ICN44.6 Los Angeles, Chinese Channel
ICN44.8 Los Angeles, English Channel

In New York and elsewhere:

  • ICN24.2 New York, Chinese Channel
  • ICN24.3 New York, English Channel
  • ICN26.4 Fan Francisco, English Channel
  • ICN55.5 Houston, Chinese Channel
  • ICN44.3 Seattle Chinese Channel
  • ICN31.2 Chicago English Channel

Beauty Media is also carried in Los Angeles, Chicago, Seattle, and San Francisco by several cable systems.

EDI Media has G&E Television, which broadcasts in English and in Chinese with English subtitles. In Los Angeles it is on 44.9.

Please try watching one of these and let us know if you find the programming useful.

United Television Broadcasting started in Los Angeles in 1971. It became a 24 hours a day broadcaster in 2009, but recently cut its programming to 90 minutes on Sunday evenings. In Los Angeles, it's now on Ch. 18. http://utbhollywood.com/en/programschedule/

English language NHK has 24 hours a day programming in Los Angeles on 28.4. http://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/schedule/

http://www.tvjapan.net/en/ is a web-based television provider, with programming in Japanese and English.

Again, please watch a Japanese-produced newscast or other program and let us know what you think.

I found this great resource that can be used in class to practice listening skills. It has some interesting stories, such as, 1. Hong Xiuquan - The Rebel 2. Qin Shi Huangdi - The emperor and some more. Here is the link. Enjoy them !
