San Diego Historical Museum

For those who are interested in doing a field trip sometime in the near future, the San Diego Historical Museum offers some really cool educational opportunities for our students. Most of these presentations have an interactive component and have the California Standard that is associated with the presentation listed with the description, just in case you have to justify the field trip to your administrators. There are two in particular that seem really interesting to me. There is one called Ancient Chinese Science and Technology, which discusses famous Chinese inventions such as paper, gunpowder, the compass, and seismograph and how they changed the world. Students will get a chance to make their own woodblock prints. The other one is called Chinese Painting and Poetry, in which the students will learn about Taoist inspired paintings and poetry. They will also get a chance to do their own art and poetry. Here is a link to the School Program section of their website. They also have a brochure you can download with more information.

This is exactly the sort of thing we should be looking into as a department at West Adams. The students will love it and I’m certain other history folks at our school will sign up. We can perhaps even look into leading a PD within our department since the museum is calibrated with our standards. I’m sure we can draw up some lessons prior to the visit and follow it up with some post lessons.
