China and Malaysia Issue the Joint Communiqué, December 15, 2005

On December 15, 2005, Premier Wen Jiabao of the State Council and his Malaysian counterpart Abdullah Ahmad Badawi issued the Joint Communiqué between the People's Republic of China and Malaysia after their talks in the latter's Prime Minister's Palace.

The Joint Communiqué says that during his visit to Malaysia, Premier Wen met with Malaysia's top leader Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin and held talks with Prime Minister Badawi. Both sides exchanged views candidly on bilateral relations and international and regional issues of common interest in a sincere and friendly atmosphere and reached broad consensus.

The Joint Communiqué says that the leaders of both sides are satisfied with the remarkable progress of bilateral relations since the establishment of diplomatic ties in 1974, holding that the development of bilateral relations has brought tangible benefits to the two countries and their people and made positive contributions to promoting peace, stability and prosperity of this region.

The Joint Communiqué says that the leaders of both sides reviewed related principles in the Joint Communiqué on Establishment of Diplomatic Relations between the People's Republic of China and Malaysia in 1974 and are determined to further expand and deepen the strategic cooperation, maintain exchanges of high-level visits, strengthen contact between their governments, parliaments, parties and people from all walks of life, promote bilateral consultations and cooperation in the areas of diplomacy, economy & trade, water conservancy, energy, science & technology, tourism, finance, combating transnational crimes and security and try to fulfill the target of 50 billion US dollars for the bilateral trade volume in 2010.

The Joint Communiqué says that Malaysia reaffirms its adherence to the one-China policy and holds that China's development is conducive to promoting this region's peace, stability and prosperity. China thanks for Malaysia's understanding and support on the issue of its peaceful reunification.

Both sides agreed to strengthen coordination and collaboration in the process of the UN reform.
