John D. Negroponte is Deputy Secretary of State and was the first Director of National Intelligence (2005-2007). He served in many different U.S. Foreign Service and White House posts from 1960 to 1997. He was ambassador to the United Nations from 2001 to 2004 and served as ambassador to Iraq 2004-2005.
