Please join the USC U.S.-China Institute and Asia Society for a talk with Weijian Shan, one of Asia’s best-known financiers, as he recounts his remarkable personal story of his exile to the Gobi Desert for hard labor at the age of 15 amidst the turmoil of Mao Zedong’s Cultural Revolution.
Asia Society Southern California, in partnership with the USC US-China Institute, is delighted to host an event with Weijian Shan on August 19. Dr. Shan's recently published national bestseller, Out of the Gobi: My Story of China and America, is a memoir that traces his life from his time in a farm labor camp in China's Gobi Desert during the Cultural Revolution to being one of the first PhD students from the People's Republic of China at the University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Shan currently is the chairman and CEO of PAG, a private-equity firm in Hong Kong, and previously was a managing director of J.P. Morgan and a professor at the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania.
The USC U.S.-China Institute presents a book talk with journalist and author Matt Sheehan. His new book chronicles the deep and interdependent socioeconomic exchanges between China and California.
