China hosted a summit with the leaders of Central Asian nations in Xi'an. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev of Kazakhstan, President Sadyr Zhaparov of Kyrgyzstan, President Emomali Rahmon of Tajikistan, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov of Turkmenistan and President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan attended the summit as well.

Xi Jinping announced China's Belt and Road Initiative though not with that name or vision. At this speech in the capital of Kazakhstan, Xi highlights the historical links between China and Central Asia. The next year he spoke in Indonesia of the maritime silk road portion of what will be known as the Belt and Road Initiative.
