Over the past several years, the balance of power in Asia has shifted as the relationships between Japan, China and the United States have grown increasingly important to the future stability of the region and the rest of the world. Trilateral relationships tend to be naturally unstable, but a host of factors further complicate the dynamics between the United States, Japan and China. Beyond historical enmities, differing philosophies of governance and increasing competition and interdependence, recent issues such as President Obama’s “Pivot to Asia,” Japan’s nationalization of the Senkaku Islands, and changes in leadership in both China and Japan have all contributed to an increasingly tense trilateral relationship. In this panel discussion, leading experts from Japan, China and the United States will analyze this complex relationship and offer their recommendations for how to manage its volatile dynamics.
