The Triangle of Sino-American Energy Diplomacy: A Symposium
Asia Society presents a seminar in which we will seek to understand how China's “resource diplomacy”—its overseas pursuit of energy and resources—affects the international system and U.S.—China relations.
Where
In current times, we see a world dominated by the United States in terms of military and strategic power, multinational corporations, political influence and soft power. Yet China has clearly begun to gain strength in each of these realms, causing its rise and its resource diplomacy to be of increasing significance to the United States' national interests and its global responsibilities. How will China's striving for resource security affect the international system, and how will that acquisition of resources, within the current global context, affect the relationship between the U.S. and China?
Please join Asia Society for a seminar in which we will seek to understand how China’s “resource diplomacy”—its overseas pursuit of energy and resources—affects the international system and U.S.—China relations. Our group of expert panelists includes Professor David Zweig, Director of the Center on Environment, Energy and Resource Policy, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology; Professor Xu Xiaojie, Chair of the World Energy Research Program, Institute of World Economics and Politics, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Professor John Garver, Professor of International Affairs,Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, Georgia Institute of Technology; Professor Nicholas Thomas, Associate Professor of the Department of Asian and International Studies, City University of Hong Kong; Ms. Susana Moreira, Ph.D. Candidate, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies; and Mr. Mark Finley, General Manager of Global Energy Markets, BP America.
***This program will travel to Asia Society’s Houston Center on October 30, 2012.
