On October 12th, 2012 the UCLA Confucius Institute announces the inaugural China Onscreen Biennial, in partnership with The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Hollywood), REDCAT (Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theatre), Pomona College (Claremont), UCLA Film & Television Archive (Billy Wilder Theatre, Hammer Museum) and The Freer Sackler Gallery (Smithsonian, Washington D.C.). This is a unique bicoastal presentation of Chinese cinematic works in venues across Los Angeles and in Washington D.C. - the respective entertainment and national capitals of the United States.

Unfolding over 17 days, China Onscreen Biennial will showcase a diverse palette of work - new films, classics, restorations, animations, shorts and documentaries - selected to introduce American audiences to the established and emerging voices of Chinese film. The film screenings will be accompanied by a synergistic program of public discussions, panels, live music performances and gallery exhibitions that aim to spark thoughtful responses and cross-cultural dialogue.

Under the direction of its curator, Cheng-Sim Lim, the film program for the China Onscreen Biennial project has been developed in collaboration with film experts from the Presenting Partner institutions as well as experts from the Advisory Board.
