The Newly Installed Chinese Art Galleries at LACMA

A Private Tour for the China Society led by Christina Yu Yu, Ph.D., Assistant Curator, Chinese and Korean Art

After a four-year hiatus LACMA’s Chinese art collection is back on display!  The new Chinese gallery showcases the museum’s comprehensive collection of Chinese art and the history of China’s five thousand years of civilization through selected key pieces dating from the Neolithic period through the Qing dynasty.  The installation highlights the strengths of the collection, including bronze vessels, ceramics, and lacquer wares.  Pieces on display trace the development of LACMA’s long history of collecting Chinese art, starting from the early 1930s with a Northern Song dynasty ceramic bowl of the yaozhou ware type and recently enriched by the acquisition of a seated Buddha of the Tang dynasty acquired through the Collectors Committee.
