1895 recounts the Hakka militia’s resistance against the Japanese troops as symbolized by the resistance leader Wu Tang-hsing’s struggle. With the portrayal of an epic love story of  Wu Tang-hsin and his wife Huang Hsien-mei and the depiction of Wu’s valiant struggle to keep the troupe together, "1895” was one of the 2008 films in Taiwan well received by the audience.
