This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. ABOUT THIS EVENT:
Professor Steve Tsang, Director of the SOAS China Institute, will be hosting our first talk of the series discussing the drivers of China’s approach to the COVID 19 virus.
China’s handling of the Covid-19 pandemic is nothing if not extraordinary. It locked down a metropolis of 11 million people at a time when such an act was deemed inconceivable in the world. Having suffered at first, it came out of the pandemic before any other country and engaged in a global publicity campaign to project itself as a saviour. This short talk will focus on what really drives Beijing’s approach from when Covid-19 first appeared in Wuhan until now.
THE LECTURE SERIES:
The Continuing the Conversations event series discusses COVID-19 in relation to an academic topic presented by a member of SOAS’ Academic staff. The event will include a talk for about 20 minutes and then a discussion regarding questions from the audience for about 10 minutes. Please make sure to submit your questions when you register for the event.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Professor Steve Tsang joined SOAS in 2016 as Director of SOAS China Institute. His expertise includes politics and governance in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, the foreign and security policies of China and Taiwan, and peace and security in East Asia.
Professor Tsang is a frequent commentator for the BBC, including for programmes like Newsnight, BBC One News, BBC News Channel, Today, BBC World Service's various programmes such as Newshour and World Tonight. He has also appeared on Sky News, Channel 4 News, Channel 5 News, Voice of America, France 24, Channel News Asia, CNBC, Al Jazeera and Russia Today.
