Video: Judith Mackay discusses efforts to curb smoking in China, the world's largest tobacco market
China's has more than 350 million smokers and they consume 37% of the world's cigarettes; the challenges are immense, but progress is being made.
Dr. Judith Mackay is a world-renown anti-tobacco campaigner. Trained as a physician in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, she has worked in Hong Kong since 1967. She's the co-author of The Tobacco Atlas, now in its third edition, and available online at tobaccoatlas.org. She's received numerous awards over the course of her career and in 2006 Time magazine named her one of Asia's most inspirational figures. In 2007, the magazine called her one of the 100 most influential people in the world.
Dr. Mackay came to USC as a "Provost Distinguished Visitor." Her presentation on January 22, 2010 was sponsored by the USC US-China Institute, the Institute for Global Health, and the School of Social Work.
