My field is urban planning and I have been working in two broad contexts in China for local/regional identity as expressed in community-level planning: diasporic hometowns along the southeast coast, and ethnic minority settlements in the Sichuan earthquake zone.
Some cross-cutting themes are property rights, localization of planning and development practices, and urban-rural relationships.
