Asia in the Classroom Lesson Plan
I teach students with Multiple Disabilities Orthopedic, (MDO). All of my students are either in adapted beds, wheelchairs or use walkers. Their disabilities are of the severe categories. Most of my students are non-verbal, or have some type of language/speech impediment/s, some are hearing impaired and some of them are visually impaired. Other students are intellectually impaired, have cerebral palsy and most of them, if not all fall under the Autism spectrum umbrella. Their intellectual abilities fall into the far below category and their abilities also fall into the far below categories as all are of varied levels and capacities. Most of them require hand over hand assistance in both academic and basic living skills. Some of them utilize Assistive Technology, as others require the use of Alternative Augmentative Communication, (AAC), devices. With all these variations in the student’s capacities, it can be very difficult at times to develop lessons that are appropriate for all of the students.
. In my lesson plan ideas, I wrote of all the possible field trip excursions that I as an educator would like to take my students on. The city of San Pedro, California iss an excellent choice. Many available options for field trips are located in the city of San Pedro, which can relate to the teachings and bringing Asia into ones classroom/s. For instance there is the Maritime Museum, which can be included in lessons on ship/s, building, transport, export /import and war. Then there is Ports of Call which is a port where ships dock. Again import/export can pertain to this place as well as different modes of transportation. For example when the goods arrive at the dock, how will they be transported to their buyers. Via train, truck, ca, etc. Then there is also the Korean Friendship Bell which is located on a hilltop and has very beautiful back drop scenery overlooking the ocean. These are just a few places of interest in the city of San Pedro that can have many wonderful lesson plan options in incorporating Asia in the classroom.
So I decided to make my 3 day lesson plan on 3 different lesson, but all pertaining to the introduction of Asia in the classroom. Day 1 would be on Bus Safety. Day 2- Would consist of making a Diorama, Day 3 –Would be on Asian Cuisine. I opted for 3 individual lesson as this is more suitable for my students, I believe in this manner they would better understand or comprehend the lesson/s or at least part of it. Moreover, since knowing my students’ abilities and capabilities, they probably would have more fun in this manner, and students learn and retain more information/knowledge when they are having fun.
The Lessons:
For Day One-I decided to make it on Bus Safety, (an Alternate Curriculum Standard), since not only this field trip, but in all future field trips the same rules would still apply. In order to get to the any location, the students would have to either travel via school buses or public transportation. So the first thing taught to the students would have to be on safety. The students will be advised that they will be going on a field trip. (Korean Bell in San Pedro) The students will be advised that when going on an outing their behavior has to be at their best and that they must listen and obey all adults on this outing. That the adults are there to assist the students so that the students can have a good time and be safe.
Lesson Plan-Bus Safety
Alternate curriculum Standard P.E. Skill 6-Travel different ways in a large group without bumping into others or falling
FPI- 6.2 -Student will navigate around stationary obstacles without bumping into others
FPI -6.3 -Student will follow leader in a group activity without bumping into others
Alternate Curriculum Standard Health Skill 2-Develop and use effective communication skills
FPI -2.7-Student will us appropriate vice volume
Anticipatory-Prior to the field trip the teacher will conduct mock field trips, for both public transportation, and school bus transportation. The students will practice going to the front entrance of the school, walk/wheel themselves in a straight line and wait for the bus, either in front of the school or on at a bus stop. On the way to the front entrance of the school, the students will be reminded to walk/wheel themselves with caution, to look where they are going, to not pass the people in front of them, and finally to take their time. At the bus stop the students will be reminded to watch for others, and to pay attention to all the environmental signs they may encounter. The students will be told to talk in their classroom voices when they are waiting for or on the bus.
Materials:
Environmental/safety signs
Bus routes schedules
Bus tokens
Crayons/paint
Lesson-
Students will be shown environmental and safety signs. They will be told what each of them mean, and what types of signs one might encounter at a certain place/s. For instance if they see a Hard hat sign, it might be indicative of a construction site. If they see a sign with the fork and knife then that sign might indicate that they are near food/restaurant area. Students would be shown the usual stop and go signs, as well as the restroom signs, and the quiet sign. The students will be shown how to read a bus schedule, along with the bus departure times and the arrival time. The students will be shown how to place the bus token in the money contraption.
Assessment-
Students will be shown the environmental signs and ask to tell the meaning of those signs
Accommodations/Modifications: For the visually impaired students the signs will be enlarged. For the non-verbal students they will be asked to point to the correct answers either, the words, or visuals. For the motor impaired students the teacher/assistant will assist accordingly, by asking the questions and allowing the student to pick from multiple choices.
Extension Activity:
Students will be given environmental/safety coloring pages, students will color/paint the pages according to real life, (i.e., stop signs-red, restroom signs –blue, school crossings-yellow, etc.
Day Two- Diorama-
The teacher will review their outing to the Friendship Bell, in San Pedro
The Lesson will consist of hands on project that will involve all of the students. We will make a diorama of the Korean Bell of Friendship background. The project will allow for the students to practice using their fine motor skills, as well as becoming creative and decorative.

2. This will be used as the handle of the lantern.
1. Fold the paper in half lengthwise. Cut strips crosswise: cut from the folded edge towards the raw edge. Be careful to keep the strips connected and do not cut each strip off.
2. Unfold the paper.
3. Loop the paper around to form a tube. Join the short ends of the paper together with tape or staples.
4. Tape or staple on the handle made in step 1 and you're done! You can make many of them and string them together - use a small piece of tape to keep them equal distance from one another

Day 3- Asian Cuisine- In including bringing ASIA IN THE CLASSROOM, I would also like the students to experience a tasting of Asian cuisine, so again I would take my students on a field trip; however this field trip would be a walking field trip to a local Chinese restaurant. Here they will experience placing and ordering a food choice of their preference, (preferably eggrolls, as the teacher would demonstrate how to make an eggroll), prior to visiting the/a a local Chinese restaurant .This will enable the students to experience purchasing and also is a step towards independent living skills, and enhancing the monetary/math skills.
Alternate Curriculum History Standard/s #7 -Understand the concept of exchange and the use of money to purchase goods and services
FPI 7.2 Student will hand money to cashier during purchase
FPI 7.6 Student will wait for change
LESSON:
Anticipatory- Students will be shown pictures of Asian food dishes, (e.g., eggrolls, chow Mein, egg- foo young, noodles, etc.) Students will be asked if anyone has seen these foods or what they are. The students will be asked if anyone has tasted these foods. Depending on the students responses teacher will acknowledge the food items.
Lesson- teacher will tell the students what these dishes are and how tasty they are or can be depending on one’s own personal taste palate. Prior to visiting the local Chinese restaurant Teacher will demonstrate the art of purchasing a food item from a local restaurant with the assistance of the classroom assistants. They will role play the procedure. Teacher will then demonstrate the process of making and eggroll in the classroom without frying it. Students will be advised that they will be walking to a nearby Chinese restaurant, and they will be able to order a food item of their choice. The students will be advised that they have to do their own ordering of said food item, that they are expected to place/ order their food, give the cashier the payment for their purchase and wait for their change. The student will also be told to act appropriately and to wait patiently for their food item/s.
*instructions apply accordingly to students capabilities
Assessment: students will be given 3-6 flash cards, (depending on their abilities), with the following words written on each of them, (fill, roll, fry, egg-roll wrapper, wrap, eat). Students will be asked to sequence the cards accordingly.
Extension Activity: Students will be given the following recipe to take home so that the student’s parents have some involvement in the/this lesson and can participate in the cooking of a simple recipe for the/their whole family. Bon appetite! Recipe follows:
Egg-rolls-

*Directions taken from Kraft Recipes on the internet, (Just an FYI in case you try making them and they turn out to be yucky!
Again I reiterate that my students are severely disabled and the easiest and simplest form to integrate and involve them in the lessons pertaining to Asia may seem a bit simple and easy. Some may understand some concepts but many may not. But the point is to expose them to Asia and the importance of why bringing Asia in the classroom is important and teaching about Asia should be a must and it will be included in my classroom from now on.
On Day 4-As a wrap-up and in extension of the 3day lesson, I will further enrich the students with small projects all still pertaining to the introduction of Asia in the classroom. For instance students will be allowed to make flags of certain cities in Asia, (e.g., Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and China). They will do this either with a paper cut out of the flag and or felt, (for texture)and students are to color it in the appropriate colors, or with They will glue the/their flag representation to a tongue depressor, and voila! A flag.
Students will also be introduced to the common courtesies in Japanese. Good day =kon-ni=chi-wa. Goodbye=sa-yo-nara. Thank-you=arigato, and Japan=Nippon
Students will be given a map of Asia, with places on interest. They will also be given the following list, so that they can research whatever suits their fancy.
