Crossing Over: Book Party and Reading of Habit Of A Foreign Sky By Xu Xi

Her self-proclaimed first "woman's novel," Xu Xi will read passages from the book at NYU and will be joined by fellow writers Luis H. Francia and Marina Budhos in a conversation moderated by Jack Tchen about "crossing over" -- from crossing genres, to crossing continents, cultures, languages, borders, and societies.

Habit of a Foreign Sky (Haven Books, 2010), a novel by Xu Xi, is a finalist in the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize and a departure from the writer's usual narrative. Her self-proclaimed first "woman's novel," Xu Xi will read passages from the book, and will be joined by fellow writers Luis H. Francia and Marina Budhos in a conversation moderated by Jack Tchen about "crossing over" -- from crossing genres, to crossing continents, cultures, languages, borders, and societies. The Asian/Pacific/American Institute at New York University hosts this stimulating conversation on the sometimes competing choices and decisions involved with being read.

Xu Xi (www.xuxiwriter.com) is author of the recently released novel Habit of a Foreign Sky, a finalist for the inaugural Man Asian Literary Prize. A Chinese-Indonesian native of Hong Kong, she is Writer-in-Residence at City University of Hong Kong where she established an international, Masters of Fine Arts in English creative writing of Asia, the first such program anywhere.

Luis H. Francia is a poet and writer and recently published A History of the Philippines: From Indios Bravos to Filipinos. He is a Professor of Creative Writing at City University of Hong Kong and Asian/Pacific/American Studies at New York University.

Marina Budhos is an author of award-winning fiction and nonfiction, and most recently published Tell Us We’re Home. She has been a Fulbright Scholar to India, given talks throughout the country and abroad, and is an associate professor of English and Asian Studies at William Paterson University.

Jack Tchen is Founding Director of the A/P/A Institute and Associate Professor of A/P/A Studies and the Gallatin School of Individualized Study.
