In his first ever public speaking engagement in the United States, the Venerable Grand Monk Master Shi Yong Xin of the Shaolin Temple in Songshan, China and Shaolin Kung Fu Monks Team will be at the Bowers Museum to celebrate Shaolin Day and to spread the knowledge of the temple’s cultural traditions. Since Bodhidharma meditated there in absolute silence for nine years, the Shaolin Temple has been recognized and revered as the sacred founding place of Chinese Zen Buddhism. Renowned for its 1500 year old martial arts and Buddhist scholars, the monks of the Shaolin Temple have won fame and prestige for creating Shaolin Kung Fu, the most well-known Chinese martial art. Master Shi Yong Xin is the 30th generation Abbot of Shaolin Temple and also serves as the vice president of the China Buddhism Association, the president of Henan Province Buddhism Association, and the representative of the 9th and 10th annual National People’s Congress of China. The Shaolin Temple Kung Fu Monks Team was founded in 1988 to promote the traditions of the Shaolin culture through martial arts.
