The Three Kingdoms Heroes Re-Viewed

The University of Michigan presents a talk by Madeline Chu, Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Kalamazoo College.

In the Mao Zonggang Edition of the Sanguo Yanyi, many Tang and Song poems were quoted to provide comments of the gallant deeds of the heroes in the novel. It is interesting to see how very different a tone was adopted by Mao's contemporaries in their poetic comments of the same heroes. The talk will present some preliminary findings in this respect. Madeline Chu, who received her BA from National Taiwan University and MA and PhD degrees from the University of Arizona, is Endowed Chair Professor of Chinese Language and Literature at Kalamazoo College. She is author of Expanded Lyricism and Patterns and Exercises, and numerous articles and reviews on classical and modern Chinese literature. Her recent research focuses on Chinese literature and culture of the Ming and Qing dynasties.
