A fixture of the Taiwanese new wave, Tsai Ming-liang returns to his native Malaysia for this moody, deliberate meditation on desire and communication in multiethnic contemporary Kuala Lumpur. Tsai axiom Lee Kang-sheng stars as a Chinese drifter who’s badly beaten by a gang of thugs before being nursed back to health by a gentle Bangladeshi laborer (Norman Bin Atun) and drawn to an intense coffee-shop waitress (Chen Shiang-chyi). Tsai’s distinctive visual style, signature obsessions and absurdist sense of humor inform his pungent portrait of a teeming, polyglot Asian metropolis.
