J. Bruce Jacobs, Professor of Asian Languages and Studies, received his AB., MA and PhD degrees from Columbia University. He studied as a postgraduate student in the History Research Institute of National Taiwan University and has been an Exchange Scholar at Nanjing University. A specialist in Chinese and Taiwan politics and society, his research interests include Taiwan's democratic transition, Cross-Straits (China-Taiwan) relations, and provincial China.
 
Professor Jacobs recently contributed an op-ed essay to the Christian Science Monitor entitled “Taiwan's history - and destiny - of freedom from Chinahttp://www.csmonitor.com/2006/1213/p09s02-coop.html. He is also the author of Democratisation in Taiwan (Monash Asia Institute, 1998) and Bitter Peaches and Plums: Two Chinese Novellas on the Recent Chinese Student Experience in Australia; translated with an introduction by J. Bruce Jacobs and Ouyang Yu (Monash Asia Institute, 1995).
