Kelly Fong, UCLA Interdepartmental Graduate Archaeology Program, will discuss the lives, experiences and memories of Chinese laundry-men in the Golden State during the late 1800s. Ms. Fong’s aim is to “facilitate collaboration between archaeology and Asian American studies.” Fong finds that “archaeology has a unique potential for letting us learn about populations marginalized in the documentary record.”
In the second half of the 19th century, the Chinese laundry business exploded. Laundrymen even traveled to Rancho Los Cerritos on a weekly basis to handle the family’s wash. Discover why this avenue of employment was open to the Chinese population as Ms. Fong explores the historical context and shares archaeology findings from Santa Barbara.
Reservations for the lecture are requested, (562) 570-1755.
Admission: $5.00 non-members; $3.00 members.
