Departures or "Okuribito" (original title)

This 2008 Japanese movie is about Daigo, a cellist in Tokyo, who loses his job and moves back to his hometown with his wife Mika. He finds an advertisement in the newspaper and goes to the interview. He is hired on the spot. Later he finds that his job is to prepare the deceased. After his wife finds out what he does, she begs Daigo to quit, but Daigo refuses to….

This movie touches on a profession that people rarely appreciate or pay respect to. It shows the dignified procedure of how the deceased is prepared in Japan. The music is great if you like cello.

I loved this film for the obvious reason, it awakens the sensitivities within in us about a topic often thought of as morbid. It also opens a window to a cultural practice that makes us admire Japan.
Hearing about the rape of Natking(hope I'm spelling it right) was very sad. I know that horrible things have happened in the name of war, so it is also good to see films like this that show us that within a group there is always good and bad.
