This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
Berkeley RADICAL Artistic Residencies Symposium: Artists, Aesthetics, and the Natural World Part I
University of California, Berkeley hosts a symposium exploring artistic, spiritual, and creative responses to the natural world in association with Cloud Gate Dance Company's Rice.

Where
Art inspired by the natural world is a particularly rich programmatic vein in the 2015-16 season, correlating to the centenary of the creation of the National Parks System. We explore artistic, spiritual, and creative responses to the natural world in twin symposia associated with Cloud Gate Dance Company of Taiwan's production of Rice (Jan 23) and St Louis Symphony's performance of Messaien's Des canyons aux étoiles ("From the Canyons to the Stars") with spectacular images by Deborah O'Grady (Jan 30).

Symposium: Artists, Aesthetics and the Natural World [part 1]
This is the first of two events on the topic of artistic response to the natural world.
1:00–2:15 pm Artist Talk with Lin Hwai-min, Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Dance Theater of Taiwan, and SanSan Kwan, UC Berkeley Department of Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies.
2:30–3:40 pm Nature, Buddhism, and Buddhist Aesthetics
Rice was conceived as a meditation on life cycles exemplified by the working of the land. Art historians Katharine Burnett of UC Davis and Patricia Berger of UC Berkeley talk with Robert Sharf, Director of UC Berkeley’s Center for Buddhist Studies to explore the relationship of Buddhist practice and aesthetics to this production. Moderated by Sabrina Klein, Director of Artistic Literacy, Cal Performances.
3:50–5 pm Rice: Connection to Earth
Yen-ling Tsai, Anthropologist and organic farmer, National Chiao Tung University, Taiwan speaks with Sara Tashker of the SF Zen Center’s Green Gulch Farm and Rob Bailis, Associate Director, Cal Performances about the kindred cultural and personal attributes of working the land, food production and creativity.
