Screening - Still Life
Thursday, April 5, 2007, 7:00 pm,
Pacific Basin Institute, Hahn 101, 420 Harvard Ave., Claremont
Filmed amidst a stunning landscape radically altered by the Three Gorges Dam project, Still Life depicts the journey of two individuals to the disintegrating town of Fengjie in search of their spouses. A poetic reflection on time, loss and uncertain futures, the film allows the striking landscape to unfold while subtly interweaving the life stories of those affected by it. Director Jia Zhangke is the leading figure of mainland China’s “Sixth Generation” filmmakers, known for their edgydocumentary style film-making techniques, produced outside state channels. Still Life won the Golden Lion for best film at the 2006 Venice Film Festival.
All screenings free and open to the public; light refreshments served.
