"Uncle" is the latest work by contemporary Chinese documentary filmmaker Zhou Hao (b. 1968). Shot over the last three years, the documentary follows the relationship between the filmmaker and two "friends" who were drug users in the city of Guangzhou. It takes the viewer to a dark and cruel layer of reality rarely exposed or explored.
The film is a work in progress and will be formally released soon.
Zhou Hao's first documentary, "Houjie Towship" (2002), was well received and won the Best Newcomer Award at the first Yunnan Multi-Culture Visual Festival that year. His second film, "Senior Year"
(2006), was recognized at the 30th Hong Kong International Film Festival and was selected for screening at various other documentary festivals in Amsterdam, Taipei, and Chicago.
Part of the international conference on modern Chinese visual culture at USC on April 6-7, the screening of Uncle is made possible by Professor Xinyu Lu of Fudan University, who will be speaking at the conference on the development of contemporary Chinese documentaries.
