China's "New Normal": An Economic Progress Report

China has set its sights on a ‘new normal’ for its economy, characterized by slower yet more sustainable growth. According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its latest report on the Chinese economy, the authorities have made progress in reining in vulnerabilities built-up since the global financial crisis and embarked on a comprehensive reform program. The transition is challenging, but the IMF assesses that the authorities will succeed, accepting slower growth and resisting temptation to revert to old ways of supporting economic activity. With China now the globe’s largest economy, success is critical for both China and the world. CSIS will explore these issues in a public event, featuring a presentation of the IMF’s latest Article IV report and a panel discussion to assess China’s progress toward the ‘new normal’.
