Overview
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is seeking a full-time industry analyst to support research focusing on reducing and replacing coal consumption in industry, as part of NRDC’s Coal to Clean Initiative, to be based in NRDC’s Beijing office.

NRDC's Beijing Representative Office is registered under the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau and supervised by the State Forestry and Grassland Administration of China.

 

Position Summary:

 

The industry analyst will lead research cooperation and engagement with Chinese partners under NRDC’s China Coal to Clean Initiative to develop policies and scale up technologies for reducing coal consumption in industry sectors, including coal mining, coal chemicals, iron and steel, cement and buildings. The research will focus on understanding industry development trends and coal reduction measures such as reducing excess industrial capacity, improving energy efficiency, and scale-up of low carbon technologies such as electric arc furnaces and piloting of hydrogen use to replace coal in industry.

Responsibilities
The industry analyst will be responsible for:

Supporting team leaders in developing an overall industry coal reduction research and advocacy plan;
Leading engagement with and managing the research projects of multiple industry partners, working with partners to prepare research proposals, budgets, contracts and compliance materials; ensuring quality project implementation that meets the research goals of the project, including organizing expert review meetings and providing expert feedback and guidance to partners to improve the research; collecting mid-term and final narrative and financial reports; and supporting reporting, monitoring and evaluation of the project. 
Synthesizing the research of partners to develop an overall industry coal reduction and decarbonization roadmap that sets targets and scenarios for coal reduction; highlights trends, opportunities and challenges for China’s industry coal reduction and decarbonization; and takes into account the latest international and Chinese efforts to decarbonize and transform industry.
Keeping up to date on the latest developments in low carbon industry transformation in China and internationally, including in industry utilization of renewable energy, hydrogen industry development, and provincial and enterprise pilots for industry decarbonization.
Presenting on behalf of NRDC in conferences and workshops to introduce and discuss research findings and recommendations, and coordinating project communication, report launch and advocacy efforts on industry coal reduction and low carbon transformation.
Working with the other members of NRDC’s China Program and US colleagues to enhance NRDC’s research and advocacy efforts and expertise on energy and environmental policy.

The Analyst will be based in NRDC’s Beijing office and will be an integral part of the NRDC China climate and energy team.

Qualifications
Master’s Degree in energy, environmental policy, science or engineering, finance or a related field, and 5-7 years of working experience in a related field or organization.
Excellent research and writing skills in both Mandarin and English.
Broad knowledge of environmental, clean energy and climate change policy in China and abroad, and experience researching and writing on environmental/energy policy. Experience in an industrial sector such as iron and steel or cement is a plus.
Ability to work cooperatively with stakeholders, including policymakers, researchers, universities, companies, and NGOs. Strong interpersonal skills and a team player.
