Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
The Chinese University of Hong Kong Summer School Chinese Language Program
The 2010 ISS-CLP spans three weeks, from 3 August to 24 August. Five levels of Putonghua courses will be offered by outstanding university level language instructors of the Chinese Language Centre at CUHK. Levels 1 and 2 courses will comprise three weeks of intensive study at CUHK and immersion activities in Hong Kong; levels 3 and 4 courses will comprise two weeks of intensive study at CUHK and a one-week immersion programme in Guangzhou, China. Immersion activities allow students to use language in real life for real communication purposes. Students will form small groups and join different theme-based trips (visits or sightseeing), such as arts and culture, history and traditions.
Online application for admission begins on 1 February 2010. Full-time undergraduate and graduate students and high school seniors who have got a confirmed offer from a recognized university are welcome.

Immersion activities in Hong Kong for Levels 1 and 2 Courses
During the last week of the programme, levels 1 and 2 students will not only have lessons in the mornings, but also language immersion activities in the afternoon to evening.
Immersion trip to Guangzhou for Levels 3 and 4 Courses
During the last week of the programme, levels 3 and 4 students will join a one-week immersion programme in Guangzhou, China.
Purpose: As part of efforts to provide students with the opportunity to use language in real life for real communication purposes, the CUHK Chinese Language Centre (CLC) has been working with educational institutions in China to provide a language immersion programme that allows students to practise what they have learned in class through a variety of activities in the target culture, an approach that has been recognized by professionals and is highly recommended as the most effective means to cultivate pragmatic competence in language learners.
Format: The daily format includes three parts: (1) lessons and pre-trip activities with CLC teachers at the host school, (2) theme-based trips (visits or sightseeing) in small groups led by assistant teachers (ATs), and (3) post-trip tasks with teachers and ATs at the host school (Q&A, discussion, presentation, etc).
Dates and Time:
18 – 24 August 2010
Lessons and pre-trip activities start at 9:30am everyday and post-trip activities normally end at about 6:00pm
Themes:
Culture and the Arts, history and traditions, contemporary local and folk customs, etc. to be determined and adjusted based on the actual situation, weather and availability.
Instructors and learning activities:
1. Experienced teacher(s) from the CLC as head teacher(s).
2. Assistant teachers from the host school with native fluency in the dialects taught as group leaders.
3. The student to teaching staff ratio will be 3 to 5:1; activities focusing on oral proficiency are carried out in groups.

Housing
Students are strongly encouraged to reside on campus so that they can live and interact more with students from different cultural backgrounds. Those residing on-campus will be housed in a student dormitory in double- or triple-occupancy rooms with shared bathroom facilities. Basic cooking facilities and communal facilities, such as laundry, study room, music room, computer room, and multi-purpose room are also available.
Levels 3 to 4 students will be housed in a student dormitory at the host university in double- or triple-occupancy rooms with shared bathroom facilities during the immersion trip in Guangzhou.
For accommodation at CUHK, students may request a longer residential period or special room arrangements through the Office of Academic Links.
Meals
For regular meals at CUHK, students can choose to dine at one of the many student canteens located throughout the campus. Meals cost around HK$20 to HK$50 per meal.
