Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
Yangqin (Chinese Dulcimer) Performance by Liu Yuening
UCLA Confucius Institute hosts a performance of yangqin by Liu Yuening

Dr. Liu Yuening is a professor of Yangqin performance at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing and a supervisor of master of arts students of traditional Chinese music at the school. She also serves as a virtual ambassador of music in her capacity as the Director of the Muisic Confucius Institute office of the school. As such, she has traveled globally and frequently serves as a judge in music competitions. She has recorded 16 albums in China and overseas, written 10 textbooks and dozens of research papers and essays. An award-winning musician and influential leader in the Chinese music world, she founded Jasmine, the first wholly-Yangqin ensemble in China, which made its debut at the closing ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008.
The Yangqin is a Chinese hammered dulcimer with three or four rows of bridges. It is played with two bamboo sticks.
