The mainland Chinese artist Wang Guangyi emerged as the leader of the Political Pop Movement in 1989, combining stylistic elements from American pop culture with a political critique of Mao’s Cultural Revolution (1966-1976). Perhaps best known for his Great Criticism series, Wang Guangyi is one of the four leading figures of contemporary Chinese painting (with Zhang Xiaogang, Fang Lijun, and Yue Minjun).
