Wanting to connect the Silk Road from Xi’an, China to Kyrgyzstan where I’ve previously lived, I started this trip with a focus on the Silk Road and its historical, cultural, and economic significance to the region of Kashgar, Urumchi, Turpan, Dunhuang, Jiayuguan, Xining, and finally to Xi’an (ancient capital and now cultural center of China).  I’ve also got a glimpse of the Tibetan life on the Plateau in Xining and Tongren.  It was very fascinating to see the contradictions, the minority voices, the different cultures that reveal so much diversity, ethnicity, and language.
