U.S. Economic Relations with Asia

Please join Los Angeles Mayor Antonio R. Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles Area Chamber of Commerce and the University of Southern California for a discussion on U.S. economic relations with Asia.

Featured Speaker:
Robert Hormats
Under Secretary of Economic, Energy and Agricultural Affairs
U.S. Department of State

Mr. Hormats serves as the Department’s senior economic official, advising the Secretary on international economic policy. As Under Secretary, he leads the work of the Department on issues ranging from trade, energy, and aviation to bilateral relations with America's economic partners.

In July of this year, Under Secretary Hormats traveled with Secretary Clinton to India, Indonesia, and Hong Kong.  The Under Secretary will address the outcomes of that trip, and how U.S. economic policy in Asia ties to the Administration’s domestic job creation goals.  In this context, he’ll also discuss the U.S. agenda for the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Forum as the United States prepares to host the APEC Leaders Summit in November.  Under Secretary Hormats’ speech would be a follow-up to Secretary Clinton’s remarks on “Principles for Prosperity in the Asia-Pacific” in Hong Kong.

As a key gateway to Asia, Los Angeles and its economic health are closely tied to international trade. Import-Export trade into Los Angeles, the nation’s No. 1 Customs District, was $348.02 billion in 2010.  The top five trade partners for Los Angeles accounted for 65.75 percent of all trade, and the top five partners are: China, Japan, S. Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.  Mayor Villaraigosa will discuss the enormous impact to the local economy from the future relationships with our Asian partners.
