Mr. Li was elected Director General of UNIDO in June 2013, following an extensive career as a senior economic and financial policy-maker. As Vice-Minister of Finance of the People's Republic of China and a decade-long member of the board of the Chinese Central Bank, Mr. Li was involved in setting and harmonizing fiscal, monetary, and industrial policies, and in supporting sound economic growth. Mr. Li is the first Chinese government official to head a major multilateral agency, and his election to the leadership of UNIDO reflects China's increasing global engagement within the multilateral system.

Due to our withdrawal from the agency in 1996, UNIDO has sometimes gone unnoticed in the United States. UNIDO is a specialized UN agency that promotes industrial development in a sustainable manner in developing and transitioning economies, as well as middle-income countries. Its mandate goes beyond fighting poverty to include energy issues and trade capacity building. With significant support from the Chinese government, Mr. Li has revitalized UNIDO as a prominent development player, and in this conversation, he will outline his agenda and aspirations for UNIDO.
