Taiwan Academy Grand Opening Lecture: Chinese Study Resources in Taiwan
The Taiwan Academy presents a lecture in celebration of its grand opening by Professor Joyce Chao-chen Chen.
Where
The Taiwan Academy
In order to promote interest in Taiwan’s Chinese culture around the world, the Republic of China government has established the Taiwan Academy. Promoting the essence of Taiwanese culture and its ‘soft power’, the Taiwan Academy will act as an important medium for increasing Taiwan’s presence on the international stage, and become a global platform for understanding people about Taiwan through her culture.
The Taiwan Academy selects the essential features of developments in the fields of culture, art, academia, education, and society, chiefly aiming to promote Mandarin Chinese teaching and the use of traditional Chinese characters, to encourage Taiwan Studies and Sinological research, and to showcase Taiwanese culture.
In light of the universal use of information technology and the ushering in of the digital age, Taiwan’s excellence in information and communication technology will be harnessed to construct a Taiwan Academy that gathers together the threads of Taiwan’s rich and varied cultures, and that represents the unique features of Chinese culture.
Professor Joyce Chao-chen Chen
Professor Chen presently serves as the university librarian and teaches the Graduate Institute of Library and Information Studies at the National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU). She received her Ph.D. degree in Library and Information Studies from National Taiwan University, concentrating on research interests include Information Organization, Digital Preservation and Metadata.
Resource Points
To showcase Taiwan’s achievements in Taiwan Studies and Sinological research, it is planned that each Taiwan Academy will have a Resource Point that will provide important real-world access to Taiwan’s academic research. Overall, it is planned that each Resource Point will be stocked with over 500 volumes of publications and digital media representing the past ten years of the most respected Taiwan Studies and Sinological research, spanning six major fields: philosophy and thought, religion, politics and society, history and geography, language and literature, and art.
The Resource Points will be connected to the Virtual Taiwan Academy, and it is hoped that their establishment will help raise the international visibility of the top publications produced by Taiwan’s governmental and nongovernmental institutions, and disseminate Taiwan’s research resources. This combination of information in print publications and on the Internet will enable scholars overseas to familiarize themselves with Taiwan’s Sinological research resources and scholarship.
