Join us for a free one-day workshop for educators at the Japanese American National Museum, hosted by the USC U.S.-China Institute and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia. This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
Student Voices: Summer Programs in China
The USC U.S. China Institute invites students and faculty to attend an informational meeting that offers insight into the many overseas study opportunities that will be available in China this upcoming summer.
Where
USC offers a variety of summer overseas study opportunities for students who wish to learn more about China, improve their Chinese language skills, continue their research on Chinese studies, or gain valuable field experience where they can apply what they've learned at USC. Find out from seven students that attended different programs about their summers and how their time in China enhanced their overall USC experience.

- Jules Hensel
Global East Asia - Shanghai (East Asian Studies Center)
Jules Hensel is a sophomore, from Chicago, studying Industrial and Systems Engineering, with minors in Psychology and Management Consulting. Jules started studying Chinese language and history in 9th grade, and has continued to take courses at USC. This past summer, he spent nine weeks in China participating in Global East Asia as well as a USC Chinese language course.
- Jenny Jonsson
Stellar & USC Women's Leadership in China (Marshall School of Business)
Jenny Jonsson is a junior at The Marshall School of Business studying entrepreneurship and minoring in photography. She is passionate about women’s leadership and has interned on many delegations to both India and China. Jenny and her mother started the Stellar Marshall Women’s leadership delegation after realizing the impacts the trips had had on her growth. - Andrew McIntyre
Hong Kong Summer Internship Program (Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism)
Andrew McIntyre is deputy editor of US-China Today and a Dean’s Scholar, Teaching Assistant and M.A. student (Print Journalism) at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism. His work appears in the South China Morning Post and on US-China Today, US-China Institute, USC News and Annenberg Digital News. Andrew received a B.A. (Music) at Emory University and an M.M. (Music Theory) at University of Massachusetts Amherst. He has previously taught at Tangshan Oriental Bilingual School, Communication University of China, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. - Richard Tomlinson
USC Beijing Summer Program (East Asian Languages and Cultures)
Richard Tomlinson is a Junior from Chicago, double majoring in International Relations and East Asian Languages and Cultures in the Dornsife College. He started studying Chinese in sophomore year of high school and have continued until today. He attended the USC Beijing program this past summer and stayed for an extra 3-weeks to work at China Wind Power, a Hong-Kong based company dealing with development of and investment in renewable energy. - Connor Wingfield
AAC Summer Study Abroad Program - China (USC School of Architecture) Connor Wingfield is a second year masters student at USC’s School of Architecture. Connor has spent 2 years living in Beijing working as a designer before returning to Shanghai in the summer of 2011. He is currently doing research with NASA and the school of Engineering at USC, focusing on ways to build infrastructure and buildings on the Moon. - Vanassa Mau
International Lab - Hong Kong and Shenzhen (School of Policy, Planning, and Development)
Vanassa Mau is a Master of Public Administration candidate at the USC School of Policy, Planning, and Development. She graduated summa cum laude from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in Political Science. Upon graduation, she plans to pursue a career in non-profit management and consulting.
