This workshop will include a guided tour of the beloved exhibition Common Ground: The Heart of Community, slated to close permanently in January 2025. Following the tour, learn strategies for engaging students in the primary source artifacts, images, and documents found in JANM’s vast collection and discover classroom-ready resources to support teaching and learning about the Japanese American experience.
A Shared Future for the U.S. China Military Relationship with Admiral Locklear
Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III will address U.S.- China relations in the context of the harsh rhetoric from North Korea, the tense situation in the East and South China Seas, and the recent improvement in military-to-military relations between China and the United States at the 46th annual Members Program.
Where
The 47th Members Program will feature Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III in conversation with National Committee President Stephen Orlins. The Admiral will address U.S.- China relations in the context of the harsh rhetoric from North Korea, the tense situation in the East and South China Seas, and the recent improvement in military-to-military relations between China and the United States.
Before becoming head of the Pacific Command in March 2012, Admiral Locklear served in many senior positions, both at sea and on shore. At sea he was commander of U.S. Naval Forces Europe and of U.S. Naval Forces Africa, as well as commander of the Allied Joint Force Command Naples. He also commanded the U.S. THIRD Fleet, the NIMITZ Strike Group and Destroyer Squadron TWO. Ashore, his service includes time as executive assistant to the vice chief of Naval Operations and as the commandant of midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy.
Admiral Locklear graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 1977. He is a 1992 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and holds a master’s degree in public administration from The George Washington University.

Biography:
Admiral Samuel J. Locklear III is a 1977 graduate of the United States Naval Academy. His career as a Surface Warfare Officer includes assignments aboard USS William V. Pratt (DDG 44), USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70), USS Callaghan (DDG 994), and USS Truxtun (CG 35), culminating in command of USS Leftwich (DD 984). Subsequent command assignments include Commander, Destroyer Squadron TWO, Commander, NIMITZ Strike Group, Commander, U.S. THIRD Fleet, and Commander, U.S. Naval Forces Europe, U.S. Naval Forces Africa, and Allied Joint Force Command Naples.
Ashore, he served as Executive Assistant to the Vice Chief of Naval Operations, the 78th Commandant of Midshipmen, United States Naval Academy, Director, Assessment Division (OPNAV N81), Director, Programming Division (OPNAV N80), and as Director, Navy Staff.
He is a 1992 graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, and holds a master’s degree in Public Administration from the George Washington University.
His personal decorations include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, Distinguished Service Medal with one gold star, Defense Superior Service Medal, Legion of Merit with four gold stars, Bronze Star Medal, and numerous individual, Campaign and Unit awards.
