Sotheby's Institute of Art - Los Angeles and the Museum of Contemporary Art Shanghai are pleased to invite you to the opening reception and panel discussion for ShanShui Within, an exhibition of new work by artists Qiu Anxiong, Yang Qingqing, Wong Leah Lihua, and Yang Yongliang. The exhibition is curated by MOCA Shanghai Deputy Director Miriam Sun.

While it bears the title Shanshui Within (“Shanshui” referring to mountains and waters), the exhibition will feature neither the landscapes commonly portrayed in ancient Chinese paintings and scrolls nor far-fetched connections between contemporary art and traditional Chinese ink painting. Here waters and mountains are displayed as poetic representations, as a spiritual refuge from worldly life, as a channel for Chinese people to communicate with the universe. The works provide viewers with unique interpretations of traditional Chinese culture and how it has evolved in relation to the rapid development of contemporary Chinese society, illuminating not only the state of the modern era but also the search for lingering traces of Chinese tradition.

The panel discussion with artists Yang Qingqing and Wong Leah Lihua will be moderated by Kejia Wu, global art world columnist for the Financial Times China and faculty for Sotheby's Institute of Art's campuses in New York and Los Angeles.
